Many visitors base their trips in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to see both cave complexes. However, they offer completely different experiences. The choice comes down to whether you prefer intricate ancient frescoes or monumental stone carvings.

What is the difference between Ajanta and Ellora Caves?

Ajanta is known for its detailed Buddhist paintings, while Ellora is famous for its large-scale structural architecture across three religions.

The Ajanta Caves consist of 30 Buddhist monuments carved into a 75-meter rock wall. They contain some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, focusing heavily on mural paintings. Ellora Caves, located about 100 kilometers from Ajanta, feature 34 caves. Ellora includes Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments, known primarily for massive stone excavations.

Which caves have better art and paintings?

The Ajanta Caves have far superior and older paintings.

Ajanta is famous for its highly expressive murals depicting the life and past lives of the Buddha. Caves 1 and 2 house the renowned Padmapani and Vajrapani frescoes. Caves 16 and 17 contain large narrative wall paintings of the Jataka tales. Flash photography is strictly prohibited inside all Ajanta caves to protect these fragile ancient frescoes.

Which site has better architecture?

Ellora Caves feature more impressive, large-scale structural architecture.

Ellora is built for structural scale. The highlight is the Kailasa Temple in Cave 16. It is the world's largest monolithic structure, carved entirely top-down from a single massive piece of basalt rock. Ellora also features detailed 9th- and 10th-century Jain carvings and early Buddhist monasteries.

Which is older, Ajanta or Ellora?

The Ajanta Caves are significantly older than the Ellora Caves.

Ajanta was built over two main phases. Construction started in the 2nd century BCE and ended around 480 CE. Ellora's excavations began later, dating from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD. If you want to see the oldest antiquities in the region, Ajanta is the clear choice.

Can you visit both Ajanta and Ellora in one day?

Visiting both sites in a single day is heavily discouraged due to the 100-kilometer distance between them.

The two complexes are far apart. Rushing through both in one day leaves very little time to actually see the monuments. Tour operators advise against booking same-day combined trips if you have tight schedules. Instead, plan a two-day itinerary. One Day or Two?
