Located about 100 kilometers from Ajanta, Ellora is a massive multi-religious cave complex. It features 34 caves carved directly into the basalt hillside.
Most visitors group Ellora and Ajanta into a single regional trip. While Ajanta is purely Buddhist and known for ancient paintings, Ellora showcases Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments. The sheer scale of the rock-cut architecture makes it a practical counterpart to your Ajanta visit.
Because the sites are 100 kilometers apart, attempting both in one day is difficult. One Day or Two? It is better to assign a separate day to explore Ellora's sprawling layout and massive structures.
1-2 hoursCliff paths available
This is the world's largest monolithic structure. Workers carved it top-down from a single massive piece of basalt rock. Climb the surrounding cliff paths for a clear top-down view of the excavation.
45 minutesCaves 1-12
These represent the earliest excavations at Ellora and are mostly large monasteries. The Vishvakarma Cave (Cave 10), known as the Carpenter's Cave, features rock carved to perfectly mimic wooden ceiling beams.
30-45 minutesFree internal shuttle
These highly detailed caves date from the 9th and 10th centuries. The Chhota Kailash is a highlight here. Because they are located further away, use the free shuttle bus provided inside the complex.
